Local Can Be Sustainable

Daniel Ionescu would probably describe himself as a journalist first and an entrepreneur second, but, given his news site now gets upwards of half a million visitors a month, Lincolnshire Business magazine has some 12,000 subscribers and the Lincolnshire Digital Awards and Lincolnshire Business Expo are both successful, local events, he and his team are clear evidence that local can be profitable and sustainable.

The Lincolnite opened for business in 2010 covering news for Central Lincoln, the greater Lincoln area and its commuter villages.  It has grown to provide an online news service covering crime, policing, court, county and city council news, human interest stories and traffic news. It sustains its news output through a conventional model of display and classified sales and employs 10 staff locally including five professional journalists, a photographer, an advertising sales executive, designer and events manager.

Whilst The Lincolnite has to date not had any complaints or other issues that it has not been able to handle in-house, Ionescu welcomed the advent of a new independent press regulator; “In my view any publisher which is not owned by one of a handful of large, national or international organisations was until now completely unrepresented in the area of press standards and guidance.

“We like the idea offered by IMPRESS of a wider remit beyond regulation where it is offering publishers a forum and networking opportunity and more extensive benefits for its members.”
